In mid 2001 I took up running. The idea initially was to do a half marathon with some colleagues from work, but after putting in the effort necessary to get to the stage where I could actually run 13 miles it seemed a pity to let it go, so I kept it up instead.

I joined a running club for some company and competition, and over the course of the next couple of years I ran 3 marathons: Belfast in May 2002, Venice in October 2002 and London in April 2003. By the time I'd finished all that I didn't want to run another road marathon for the rest of my life, but I now enjoy running in the woods and on the hills.

The Buttermere Round Early one morning in February 2003 I drove up to Keswick in the Lake District to take part in the Buttermere Round, which is a 22 mile road race through some of the most challenging country around. It was a fantastic experience :-)
